This course is designed for the designated security professional or staff members whose role encompasses not only general area security but the specific role of dealing with violent and/or disturbed individuals in the pre-hospital, emergency department or psychiatric setting.

In addition to conflict management skills whose aim is to avoid physical confrontation, these staff will be enabled with force options which include the use of handcuffs and/or the Emergency Restraint Belt (a medically approved cloth-velcro restraint device) which drastically reduce the serious risks inherent in a violent restraint incident.

Full Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, your staff will have successfully completed all the necessary learning outcomes for the award of a certificate of competency from Dynamis.

Staff who successfully complete this course will:

  • Understand the concept of Reasonable Force in relation to physical intervention and restraint.
  • Examine the requirements of staff ‘Duty of Care’ and show how it applies to managing violent incidents.
  • Examine and Demonstrate effective personal protection and confrontation management skills according to a behaviourally-based approach.
  • Evaluate the risks associated with violent incidents and explore how to minimise those risks.
  • Differentiate between holding, escorting and restraining and non-harmful seated restraint techniques and how to apply them.
  • Explore the risks of associated with alcohol and drugs, knives and other forms of edged weapons in relation to violence management and tactics.
  • Investigate the difference between non-harmful methods of control and more restrictive methods of control and when the use of such methods would be considered appropriate.
  • Understand the operating principles of emergency restraint devices and their safe application and removal, including the inherent risks with their use.
